Two things I've learned as a student

The function of pain is to help you stay awake during boring lectures.
The function of fingernails is to inflict said pain on yourself.

Very effective. I highly recommend it.

  2. Depends on your course of study. But, I do recommend pinching non-vital organs only. Stay off the larynx, for example.
