How does a professor get rich?

I have heard a saying once: Acting in movies makes you rich, on TV makes you famous, and on stage makes you happy.

Largely, and with many exceptions, one could say that as a professor, teaching makes you happy, doing research makes you famous... but what makes you rich?

I really need to know.

  2. I just learned how much Jared Diamond gets when he gives an invited lecture. Let's just say it's more than my yearly stipend. I wonder how much he got from Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse.

In the same discussion it was said that Purves, who write an introductory biology book, Life, ended up after editing it for many years earning around $100,000 per year in royalties.
